Homework Started This Week

Students excitedly "oohed and ahhhed" as they received their student assignment notebook, or planner, on Monday. Their chatter grew as they shared what they  noticed about this new addition. Then we started filling it out, and we learned a few shortcuts while we worked.

First one is the students place all the weeklong assignments on Monday and then draw an arrow through all four days signifying that it is to be finished by Thursday and turned in on Friday. Math packets (sometimes abbreviated PKT) and Spell Well are recorded this way. Other assignments will be recorded on the day they are given, and a due date will be marked in the planner.

Students are allowed to abbreviate certain words: PKT=packet, and for recording their reading, they can abbreviate in this way:

T_______________________   On the "T" line they record the title of the book the student is reading

S___________      E___________ "S" and "E" is the starting page for that day and the ending page for that day.  At the bottom of the planner is a place where they can record how many minutes they read that day. Students are only required to read 20 minutes per day this month. Next month it ups to 30.

Homework can be turned in as it is done, but planners are not turned in until Friday. Also, planners are a great communication tool between you and me. You can put dismissal notes, homework notes, or any other kind of note or question there for me to see.
