Birthdays and Birthday Treats---When do we celebrate and what are good choices for birthday treats?

Our parent handbook is very specific about birthday treats. It states:
"Birthdays are a special time when we honor each child. Parents are welcome to provide a special snack on the day that we celebrate your child’s birthday. Mini-cupcakes or a small food item work well because they are a not-too-big treat.

So what makes a good "small food item"? Here are some examples:
1.    Chocolate dipped strawberries
2.    Munchkins
3.    Small, individual bags of Popcorn or pretzels.
4.    Granola bars.
5.    Cookies (one cookie per person)
6.    Muffins (one muffin per person)
7.    Oranges
8.    Dried fruit like raisins, apricots, or craisins
9.    100% fruit roll ups
10.    A small box/bag of Animal crackers per person.
11.    Individually wrapped servings of pudding, fruit, or yogurt.
12.    Fruit Kabobs (cut fruit on a stick and dipped in vanilla yogurt, or alternate strawberries, grapes, and cheddar or Colby cheese cubes)
13.    Pure fruit popsicles

Food items that require the teacher to cut and serve are very cumbersome and time consuming--causing the children to wait a long time for the treat. Some examples include cakes, cupcake cakes, and ice cream that requires scooping and serving. Thanks for your cooperation with this.

And while we're on the topic of birthdays, in the Upper School, we celebrate birthdays during Worship with a festive announcement on the last Wednesday of the month. Each child will be presented with a book that will be added to the school library in your child's honor. We try to pick books that have a connection to the child or our current area of study. Please come and help us celebrate your child.

Families are encouraged to contribute toward the cost of the book may give a check to the school, or you may order one directly from our wish list at Amazon.com. Books will be hard cover and cost about $15.00
