Contour Line Drawing

Artist in Residence, Maureen White, who taught at Mustard Seed for many years, instructed the students in contour line drawings last week. Ms. White told the students that it takes a lot of focus and concentration to use one fluid line, never lifting the pen, to create a shape similar to the object.

Some students used blind contour drawing technique--students look at the object but not at their hand, and allow their eyes to guide their hand. Others used quick checking peeks at their paper to make sure the line was becoming the shape they were trying to create. Once they felt their draw was done, we added color to the drawings.
