You might have noticed that there are no pictures of ghosts and witches on the walls at Mustard Seed School. This is because we don't celebrate Halloween in school. Now while that may sound a bit harsh, we really are thinking about families and that there are different ways they spend this day. We realize that this is a special day for children, and we know that keeping the focus on school helps them go through a very long day. There are parades and treats that happen after school. If we begin the day in that way, the children's energy is soon spent, and by the afternoon there can be tears and meltdowns. Accordingly, we ask that children do not come to school in costume or with Halloween treats. We will have a typical day of school, listen to their excitement about after-school plans, and hope that the rest of the day is enjoyable for them.
On Friday, it is tempting to bring Halloween treats for lunch and snack. I have had a discussion with the students about an appropriate treat for dessert on Friday. Please help your fourth grader make wise choices regarding candy at school.
