Urban vs Rural

As a part of our Social Studies this term we have been discussing what makes an area urban, and what makes it rural. Our visit to the farm was helpful in understanding the differences. We discussed that all types of communities need people, homes, places to work, play and learn. There needs to be a government, sanitation, police, and fire. You have to be able to get around your community with some form of transportation.

Today, as a transition activity, we began designing our own communities. Students chose to have an urban, rural, or both as a their focus of design. Semaj has a city that focuses on sports. Paulo and Sebastian have chosen automobile makers as the focus of the urban area design. Some are designing communities that are very like their own.

As a part of the mini-term we will corporately build, and maintain a community for stub people. Horrible Harry in Room 2B shares that Horrible Harry is very good at create people from stubs of recyclables. He calls them stub people. So we will be incorporating a bit of science into our social studies unit by way of reduce, reuse, recycle. Stop by near the end of December to see our progress.
