This Week in the Fourth Grade 10/6/10

Marcus Wilson, Our Student of the Week
Marcus has many interests, but from his artifacts you could tell he liked sports, and has a desire to travel. Marcus participated in many sports since he was 3 years old--gymnastics, soccer, and baseball. He has the medals and trophies to prove it.

As for travel, he shared a ship he purchased while on a trip to the Dominican Republic with his mother. When asked where he wanted to travel, he said, "Paris...to see the Eiffel Tower." I hope you get your wish Marcus.

"I'm still hungry Mrs. McCallihan"
You would not believe how many times a day I hear that statement, which tells me that the students are focusing on their stomachs and not on their school work. The fourth graders are working hard, and playing hard, and their snack and lunch time foods provide the necessary fuel to get them through the day. Snacks that are high in protein and vitamins are good choices to carry them through from meal to meal, namely cheese, meats, nuts, whole grain breads or crackers, fruits and vegetables. On the flip side, foods high in sugar, starch, and carbohydrates are metabolized quickly and then cause an energy crash. Please help your child make healthy food choices for their snack and lunch items.

Stevens Institute and PISA2 Celebration
Monday, October 4, Mustard Seed School participated in a science celebration at Stevens Institute Babbio Center. Marcus Wilson and Abigail Ng attended the celebration as representatives of the fourth grade. The students, staff, and board members attended a poster session of work done by the participating schools' classes. Our students shared their work on landform models.


October Service Project
Our worship theme for the month of October is "Buildings and Builders." During this month we will partner with the Esmirna School for the Deaf in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. One hundred deaf students attend the day school and their afterschool programs serves more than 250 poor children in the local neighborhood. As the number of children wanting to attend the school has grown they have started building additional classrooms. One way Mustard Seed students can help this growing school is to provide school supplies!

We will begin the collection tomorrow and it will continue through Thursday, October 28.

Each grade level at MSS will collect a specific item:

K: new boxes of crayons
1st: new boxes of markers
2nd: glue sticks
3rd: kids scissors
4th: tape (rolls of masking tape and scotch tape)
5th: one subject spiral notebooks
6th: pens
7th: pencils
8th: pocket folders

After School Clubs
Mustard Seed School provides a variety of after school clubs throughout the year, and they are run by dedicated, and qualified people. The leaders of the clubs, or the office, are the contact people for the club. I receive many questions about the clubs, but I don't have the answers to those questions. Please check the Que Pasa, the office, or when I have the information, this blog, for the contact person of the club you have an interested in.
