Because of Winn-Dixie is a very emotional story. It was written by Kate DiCamillo. The story is about a young girl named Opal, she is a preacher’s daughter. When Opal moves to a new house with her father, at first, she does not make many friends, but then she goes to a grocery store, finds a dog, and takes it home to ask her dad if she can keep it. She names the dog Winn-Dixie after the super market she found him in. Opal’s best friend is her dog.



Opals mother drank whiskey regularly, and she disliked being a preacher's wife. She left Opal when she was very little. This was a very sensitive subject for Opal and her father because he didn’t want to think about it. After they talked about it, it made their relationship stronger.



Opal worked at a pet store named Gratitude’s Pets, to pay off a leash that she wanted for Winn-Dixie. Opal meets two old women. The first one works at the library telling stories. Her name was Frannie Block. She told a story of a young boy who fought in the war. He then walked to Florida once he lost everything. He built a candy factory that became very famous for the sweet candy that also had sadness in it. The second woman was Gloria Dump, she was considered to be a witch. When Opal lost Winn-Dixie, Gloria found him.



I learned to love things when you have them, and that it does not matter what somebody else thinks, it matters what you think. It is important not to let anyone put you down. Always have good attitude. If you like to laugh, and read about happy endings you will like this story.
