"We are only here now, remembering"

Ask an upper school student what line of the Way of the Cross liturgy sticks with them, and most likely, they will recite these, "We are only here now, remembering." This is what we do, as a community, during the Way of the Cross. We remember the suffering Jesus endured, and his death on the cross. At each station words from the Bible are shared about what happened to Jesus during his way to the cross--from the beatings to the burial preparation. Then we are asked questions, such as "Here and now, what do I do when someone is wrongly blamed for something he or she didn't do?" And, "Here and now, do I respond eagerly when my parents and teachers ask me to help with difficult chores?" It is touching to see how many fourth grade heads are nodding "yes" in answer to these questions. Their genuine, and heart felt, response is moving.
